Campaign Finance & Free Speech + Beer = LOTR Happy Hour!

Join Liberty On the Rocks Denver for a spirited discussion of free speech in the context of Colorado’s campaign finance laws. Diana Hsieh and Ari Armstrong will discuss the nature of those laws and their adverse impact on the free speech rights of political activists. They’ll also review the proposed campaign finance rule changes to be discussed at a Dec. 15 hearing with Secretary of State Scott Gessler — including why you should support those changes and how you can do so.

We will kick things off at 6:15 with a short free market exercise and group discussion, followed by plenty of networking. We will hear from Ari and Diana around 7:15, after the 30-second soapbox.

Wednesday, Dec 7th, between 6-9 pm
Choppers Sports Grill, 80 S. Madison Street in Denver (back room)

Ari Armstrong publishes FreeColorado.com, coauthors a twice-monthly column for Grand Junction Free Press, and contributes regularly to The Objective Standard. Ari has also written articles for such publications as the Denver Post and Colorado Springs Gazette.

Diana Hsieh earned her doctorate in philosophy from the University of Colorado at Boulder in 2009. Every Sunday, she hosts a weekly webcast applying philosophy to real life at http://PhilosophyInAction.com/. She also blogs at NoodleFood.

All ladies attending our March 16th happy hour will receive one free drink ticket, so bring your friends and come on out! It may be a double standard, but it’s our right to do it – and we’d like to celebrate that right!

This week’s mock debate will surround the important topic of free trade. Participants will be asked: Should Government Regulate Free Trade? We already have volunteers for the pro-liberty side, but could use one more on the “progressive” side. To learn more about the mock debates or to sign up for a role visit: http://bit.ly/fnEJcD

Political Debate: Which Party is a Bigger Champion of Liberty – Republicans or Libertarians?

Republicans or Libertarians: Which Party is the Biggest Advancer of Liberty and Freedom?

Join fellow liberty-lovers for happy hour this Wednesday night, as we debate this topic and many more at Liberty on the Rocks Denver. Our featured speakers will be Kelly Maher of Who Said, You Said and David K. Williams of the Gadsden Society and State Chair of the Libertarian Party. They will be debating which party (Republican or Libertarian) advances liberty further. We hope you will join in this friendly debate!

RSVP

Mock Debate:

We will also start the night out with a mock debate from 6-7 PM – for those of us who aren’t ready to debate in public (like our stars David and Kelly), this is the way to prepare! Debate amongst friends, over beers and with an audience to throw in tips and strategies. What better way to train as a Defender of Liberty than at the bar with friends?!

Anyone is welcome to join in the mock debate. We are looking for volunteers to be debaters, judges and members of the audience. If you’re interested, sign up here.  The topic for this week’s mock debate will be: Do Public Sector Employees have the right to unionize and institute collective bargaining?

What IS Liberty on the Rocks Denver?

Liberty on the Rocks is Denver’s gathering place where individuals interested in the principles of liberty can join together, share ideas and learn from one another. LOTR Denver is also the place to learn of other organizations in the area and nationally – as well as how to get involved with them in the fight for liberty.

Happy Hour @ Choppers Sports Grill!

Join fellow liberty lovers for happy hour  and political conversation Wednesday, February 2nd at Choppers Sports Grill!

This is the place to network, converse, learn and share and to meet new people in the liberty movement. What better way to stay connected than to share drinks in a warm bar over great conversation?! This is also the place to learn about local groups, causes and events in the Denver area.

Look for us in the dining room – we will have a sign posted and literature strewn about!

Also – if you are looking to polish up on your communication skills and love a good natured debate with friends, then join us from 6-7PM for our second Political Mock Debate!  This fun exercise is open to anyone and we are looking for volunteers. We need participants on the pro and anti-liberty side (we need you to *pretend* to be anti-liberty of course!), 1-3 judges and members of the audience. Our first debate was a great success! We had a ton of fun and discussed some new ideas for promoting our viewpoints. For our next debate the topic will be: What Role should the Government Play when it comes to Fixing the Economy?

To participate in next weeks mock debate (not a real debate, mind you), please sign up here.

*Pre-Meeting “Debate” 6-7PM

Political Mock Debate (Open to All!) Rescheduled!

Are you a defender of freedom wishing to enhance your communication skills when it comes to promoting America’s founding principles?

Well there is no better way than to practice! So why not do it with friends before you attempt to make your case to others?

Liberty on the Rocks Denver has rescheduled their first political mock debate for next Wednesday (Jan. 19) to help our members and guests become better advocates for freedom by sharpening their communication skills. The “debate” will be friendly in nature, and will be made up of two teams and two to three judges. Our topic will be whether or not the government should stimulate the economy. The goal is to get members of both teams to consider how they would respond to these principles, as well as how the other side would.

Anyone is welcome to join us for this special pre-meeting from 6-7PM in the back room of Choppers Sports Grill. Whether you’d like to participate as a debater, a judge or a member of the audience – we hope you will attend!

If you would like to participate, please sign up here!

Do Voters Make Rational Decisions at the Ballot Box?

Or is that a myth? If so, what are the consequences? What does that mean for our liberties?

This Wednesday, we will be joined by Justin Longo of the Independence Institute, who will briefly discuss the topic: Myths of the Rational Voter. The purpose of this discussion will be for us to begin contemplating new ways to make an impact, including steps we can take to become activists for liberty on a daily basis.
