*Pre-Meeting “Debate” 6-7PM

Political Mock Debate (Open to All!) Rescheduled!

Are you a defender of freedom wishing to enhance your communication skills when it comes to promoting America’s founding principles?

Well there is no better way than to practice! So why not do it with friends before you attempt to make your case to others?

Liberty on the Rocks Denver has rescheduled their first political mock debate for next Wednesday (Jan. 19) to help our members and guests become better advocates for freedom by sharpening their communication skills. The “debate” will be friendly in nature, and will be made up of two teams and two to three judges. Our topic will be whether or not the government should stimulate the economy. The goal is to get members of both teams to consider how they would respond to these principles, as well as how the other side would.

Anyone is welcome to join us for this special pre-meeting from 6-7PM in the back room of Choppers Sports Grill. Whether you’d like to participate as a debater, a judge or a member of the audience – we hope you will attend!

If you would like to participate, please sign up here!

Jan. 17th meetup — Ken Summers and Education Reform

Ken Summers – Up On The Roof!

“Education Paradigm”
Liberty On The Rocks (Red Rocks) Happy Hour
January 17, 2011

Liberty kicks off 2011 and MLK day with our goals for education and peaceful citizen advocacy in the forefront, with our very special guest, Representative Ken Summers!

Location: Old Chicago (upstairs) | 145 Union Boulevard, Lakewood, CO

Is education a choice? Do great teachers, students, parents, or the union make for great student achievement? Have we lost our way? Is Jeffco really a “local” district? If you get what you pay for, why do we not pay school board members? Do great teachers make great leaders and business executives? Will more money and more union input truly make for better students?

Bring your questions for Colorado’s own HD 22 state rep, Ken Summers. Rep. Summers sits on the state education committee at the capitol, is a pastor, and just one darn nice fellow! He will take on your questions about education reform, school choice, vouchers, and so much more. And I give you my word that even though he will be speaking in Jeffco, we won’t “CENSURE” him. To learn more about Rep. Summers, please visit http://kensummers.org.

Tons of great news and upcoming events, so pay attention! WARNING: THIS UPDATE IS LONGER THAN NORMAL, BUT WE ARE LAYING A FOUNDATION FOR 2011, SO PLEASE TAKE THE TIME TO READ ALL!

Citizen Advocates’ Network is a great new networking group that I have recently established. Citizen Advocates’ Network is an informal group of concerned citizens choosing to defend their constitutional rights and promote free markets, individual rights, and limited government. The “C.A.N. Do” members will champion issues such as transparency, accountability, education reform, fiscal responsibility, property rights, other civic issues, and a return to Liberty-focused values. We encourage members to lead by example. If you believe in life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, and prefer to be a responsible citizen with limited nanny intrusions, this is your group! When you have an issue near and dear to you, please bring it to the groups’ attention and lead the fight.

Information can be found at our FB group page: Citizen Advocates’ Network, so please be sure to request to be added if you are on FB. Also, be sure to adjust your settings on FB if you don’t want to receive an e-mail each time we post to the wall at C.A.N.

For folks that follow us via e-mail, we have started a google group for those interested in participating in the Citizen Advocates’ Network. E-mail (sacco@LibertyOnTheRocks.org) and I will add you to the group.

Those folks participating in the C.A.N. Group or who are interested in Regan’s Students First group may want to begin to get up to speed on Jeffco school issues by attending the next board of education study session this upcoming Thursday at 7p.m. Details about the study session are posted at http://www.jeffcopublicschools.org/board/index.html.
Also, if you have any ideas, school choice week begins January 23-29th and Liberty would be interested in hosting an event if you have any suggestions. Details about school choice week at http://schoolchoiceweek.com.

Local Colorado Activists Question Democratic Candidates on Tax Issues

While attending a campaign event for Democratic Gubernatorial candidate John Hickenlooper along with a few local activists, I became curious about whether the current Mayor was planning to lower our taxes if he was elected to be Colorado’s governor.  After spending about 10 minutes talking about the importance of the economy and helping families who are struggling financially, I thought it was a fair question to ask. So what was the Mayor’s response? To say that we are “…about as low as we can go with taxes.”

Check out the story and watch a video of the Mayor’s response on the new up and coming site Who Said, You Said.

After hearing the Mayor’s response, I perused the local Colorado Spending Transparency site, a project of the Independence Institute, where I (quickly) found a story exposing the fact that over $9 million of the Colorado State budget was spent on a combination of bankcard fees, interest on late payments and a host of other miscellaneous fees and fines. It doesn’t stop there either. Another story shows us that since the beginning of July of this year, $764,024.72 has been spent on advertising for the state. Gee, I wonder what it is they are advertising? Maybe it’s how well they are spending our money? Perhaps Hickenlooper should put an additional clause on his statement reading “…so long as we continue down the path of wasting a good portion of the money that is already coming in…”

Gubernatorial Candidate Tom Tancredo Attends Liberty on the Rocks Denver

Stressing out about the upcoming election? Need to connect with some liberty-minded friends? Then you won’t want to miss Liberty on the Rocks this Wednesday with featured guest Tom Tancredo!

Former congressman Tom Tancredo recently announced his decision to run for governor on the American Constitution Party ticket. What will that mean for the state of Colorado? Will it split the Conservative ticket and allow for a Hickenlooper victory? Or will he be the voice Colorado needs to bring freedom back to the state? Join us this Wednesday to discuss these important issues and more with Tom and your freedom-loving friends in Denver.

Social hour kicks off at 7 pm and announcements will be at 7:45. Stick around to hear Tom address his candidacy and answer any questions you may have.

Disclaimer: Liberty on the Rocks aims to educate guests and provide networking opportunities for activists, politicians and individuals interested in promoting freedom in America.
