civil asset forfeiture

What is Asset Forfeiture?

Asset forfeiture laws allow American state and federal law enforcement agencies extraordinary powers to raise revenues through the seizure of private property.

As federal and state criminal and civil laws multiply and are enforced by ever-growing bureaucracies, asset forfeiture has come to represent the most serious assault on the right to private property in the U.S. today, and is implicated in a number of serious issues of law and governance, including the federalization and militarization of domestic law enforcement, the emergence of de facto private prosecution, the existence of the War on Drugs, and the emerging regulatory burden faced by businesses operating in the United States and abroad.

Presentation by Randal O’Toole of CATO

No happy hour this week! See “change of plans” below:

The American Dream turned into a nightmare when the housing bubble burst, and people have been trying to figure out who to blame- Greedy bankers? Corrupt politicians? Ignorant homeowners? In American Nightmare: How Government Undermines the Dream of Homeownership, Randal O’Toole explores the forces at play in the housing market and shows how we can rebuild the American dream of homeownership by eliminating federal, state, and local policies that distort the free market for housing.

Please join the Independence Institute and Liberty on the Rocks for a presentation with Mr. O’Toole on Wednesday evening, June 20 at the Independence Institute.

When: Wednesday, June 20, 2012, 5:30-7pm
Where: Independence Institute | 727 E. 16th Ave., Denver

5:30 PM Refreshments
6:00 PM Presentation

*”Ask an Austrian” (AAA), is a continuing series to attempt to learn more about the basics of Austrian Economics. This segment will generally last from 5 – 15 minutes in duration, and on any given day might be an exercise, simple Q&A, or brief comments, and will be handled by an Austrian enthusiast when/if present. We would encourage our attendees to bring a pertinent article(s) to share with the group. Our hope is for a member(s) to step up and take on a position to implement AAA programming as a standard segment past our introductory year.

When our government picks winners and losers in energy… we all lose.

Join us on Friday, May 4th for a conversation about green energy in Colorado with Amy Oliver Cooke and Donovan Schafer of the Independence Institute.

Throughout the discussion (which will be followed by Q & A) you will learn:

  • How we have turned against energy production in Colorado
  • Why “green” energy is unaffordable, unreliable and a danger to our way of life
  • How environmentalists view ‘fracking’ – and why they are wrong
  • How oil and gas are beneficial to our lives
  • How to talk to others about these issues effectively

Mt. Diablo Liberty on the Rocks

Mt Diablo Liberty on the Rocks returns this time in Martinez. Come to the Creek Monkey with fellow liberty lovers for drinks and/or dinner. This place is owned by a local Martinez resident supportive of our ideals of free markets and individual rights.

Lets support our fellow pro-liberty business owners and join your fellow Liberty on the Rocks’sters in celebrating Tax Freedom Day, the first day you begin working for yourself each year instead of working to continue supporting our out of control government.

The event is free other than buying your own food and drinks so come on down!

CO Springs Economics Training Wrap Up

On Saturday, March 31st, Liberty on the Rocks was pleased to host Jeff Proctor of the Charles Koch Institute who presented economics lessons for free market advocates in Colorado Springs.

On a most beautiful Saturday in the beginning of spring, we were pleased to have 25 liberty-lovers join us for a 5-hour economics session. It wasn’t quite the 60+ we had in Denver a month beforehand, but weather was definitely a culprit (being that it was too nice to stay indoors)!

Throughout this five hour session attendees participated in a number of educational activities and delved into some in-depth group discussion. Whether it was learning the ins and outs of price creation or gaining a better understanding for how the free market works, attendees not only strengthened their knowledge, they also enhanced the size of their network while enjoying themselves in the process!

In addition to debunking some of the arguments made in the Story of Broke (a project of the horribly inaccurate Story of Stuff), we also hosted a panel at the end of the session that allowed attendees to ask all the questions their hearts desired – and boy did they have questions! Participants on the panel included our facilitator Jeff Proctor, Dr. Paul Prentice of the Ludwig Von Mises Institute, Professor Joshua Dunn of UCCS, and Justin Longo of the Independence Institute. With this great line-up, it was no surprise that even after 45-minutes of Q & A participants stuck around for another hour and a half to mingle one-on-one with the days instructors and panelists. Overall, it was a great success! This was not only indicated by the lively discussions and enthusiasm for the activities, but from the positive and encouraging comments that followed.

We hope to follow this last session with another in the coming months. Possible location: Louisville, CO.
